Both should be protected to avoid risks, but each type of fragile roof is protected differently.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Ypsos Safety, flat skylights are protected with our <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/pignus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PIGNUS nets<\/a>, in the <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/pignus-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Panel <\/a>and Plate versions for sandwich panel and single sheet roofs, respectively.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today we will focus on protecting domed skylights, looking at the types of protection depending on the models we may encounter.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Is a <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/pignus-skylight-fix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Domed Skylight<\/a>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let us start by defining this type of skylight: a domed skylight is an opening in a ceiling or in an elevated part of a roof, designed to let natural light into the interior.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In general, domed skylights consist of a frame and a transparent panel, such as glass or clear plastic, that lets sunlight into the space below.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These structures are used in a variety of buildings, such as homes and commercial and industrial buildings, to improve natural lighting and reduce the need for artificial lighting during the day.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to providing light, domed skylights can also include ventilation to allow fresh air to circulate.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Types of Domed Skylights Are There?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are various types of domed skylights; they can be fixed or hinged, and within each we find several models that help us determine which type of protection suits each one.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on their shape, the condition of the materials, and whether or not they can be opened, we can determine a suitable protection system.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Types of Protection<\/strong> for Domed Skylights<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the type of domed skylight we encounter, there are various protection options. We can find the following:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For exterior protection<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Metal mesh<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Frames with metal mesh<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety nets<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fixed perimeter guardrail<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/utilidades-de-las-barandillas-contrapesadas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Counterweighted perimeter protection guardrail<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For interior protection<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Protective trays<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"782\" src=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/pignus-skylight-fix-malla-para-claraboya-5-1024x782.png\" alt=\"metal tray to protect domed skylights\" class=\"wp-image-12229\" style=\"width:548px;height:auto\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Domed skylight protected by a metal tray<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Which Protection Should You Choose for a Domed Skylight?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first thing to look at when choosing one type of protection over another is the condition of the domed skylights themselves and their purpose.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Old Domed Skylights<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the domed skylights are very old or do not need to open, we will sometimes have difficulty removing them, since over time the condition of their materials will have weakened and breakage may occur.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another factor to keep in mind in these situations is that, on very old domed skylights, removing them to install interior protection can affect their subsequent waterproofing, making water penetration more likely, with the risks that entails.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Given these cases, the best solutions would be to install exterior protection using the systems mentioned above. Which system to use will depend on the shape of the domed skylights and the type of roof where they must be installed.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Without Anchor Points<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On roofs where anchor elements cannot be fixed, we have several options. First, we can use frameless metal mesh or nets, since they are installed by wrapping around the outside of the skylight curb with ratchet straps or cinch straps, so no fastenings are needed.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Second, if these systems are not the most suitable because of the size or shape of the domed skylights, we can also protect them with counterweighted perimeter protection guardrails. These are the same safety systems used as collective protection against the risk of falling over the edge of roofs, adapted to the perimeter of the skylights.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>With Anchor Points<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where roofs allow anchor elements to be fixed to them, we also have framed metal mesh, fixing these elements to the roof once the domed skylights have been protected from the outside, or alternatively the guardrails mentioned above, but in their fixed version.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hinged Domed Skylights<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another detail in deciding whether we can cover this type of special skylight is whether it can be opened, since there are versions of these systems on the market that let in natural light and also have this opening option.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In those cases, we can use perimeter protection guardrails that do not prevent the skylights from opening, or we can provide interior protection with trays, which, once the domed skylights are open, prevent falls into the void.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These trays come in different materials and dimensions, always adapted to the needs of the domed skylights to be protected.
