The roof or structure must be able to absorb the forces transmitted in the event of a fall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The span length and the distance between intermediate anchors.<\/strong> They determine the sag of the line and the forces on the end anchors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The number of users and their weight.<\/strong> The more simultaneous users there are, the greater the loads the assembly must withstand in a fall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The personal protective equipment (PPE) used<\/strong>, especially the energy absorber and the connector.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is why two lifelines that look similar can support a different number of users.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Maximum Capacity of a Horizontal Lifeline: How Many Workers Can Anchor On<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Horizontal lifelines allow one or several workers to move while maintaining a continuous connection to an anchor system.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are commonly used in:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Industrial roofs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Photovoltaic installations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Logistics buildings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technical walkways.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintenance areas.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Industrial structures.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the fact that a lifeline is long enough to physically accommodate several workers does not mean it was designed for simultaneous use.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <strong>UNE-EN 795:2012<\/strong> standard covers, within its scope, anchor devices intended for a single user. When the device must be used simultaneously by more than one person, the technical specification <strong>CEN\/TS 16415<\/strong> applies, which is specific to multi-user anchor devices.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consequently, to determine <strong>how many workers can use a horizontal lifeline at the same time<\/strong>, the answer must be obtained from the technical documentation of the installed system, and not set by judgment or intuition on site.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Maximum Users by Lifeline Type<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The maximum number of users on a lifeline depends mainly on the system&#8217;s technology and on what the manufacturer specifies. If you want to dig deeper, here is a guide to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/lineas-de-vida-tipos\/\">types of lifelines for work at height<\/a>. In general, we distinguish between two types:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Flexible lifelines (cable):<\/strong> the cable deforms when it takes a fall, which absorbs part of the energy but also generates high forces at the ends. For that reason, the maximum capacity of these lifelines is limited and is defined by the manufacturer for each configuration.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rigid lifelines (rail):<\/strong> because they do not deform in the same way, their behavior is different, and the number of users allowed is also determined by the manufacturer according to the model.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practical rule is the same in both cases: <strong>never exceed the number of users specified by the manufacturer<\/strong>, and never assume that a line can hold more people simply because it is long.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How the Capacity of a Lifeline Is Calculated<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The capacity calculation is performed during the system design phase and takes into account, among other aspects, the <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/elementos-que-componen-una-linea-de-vida\/\">components of a lifeline<\/a> and how they behave together.<\/p>\n\n<ol start=\"1\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>System geometry.<\/strong> The span lengths and the configuration of the line directly affect its behavior during a fall.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Line deformation.<\/strong> In flexible systems, the cable deforms when it takes the load. This deformation affects both the forces transmitted and the resulting fall distance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Energy absorbers.<\/strong> Some systems include devices designed to reduce the forces transmitted to the anchors and to the supporting structure.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>End and intermediate supports.<\/strong> They do not all receive the same loads and must be installed in accordance with the conditions established for the specific system.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The supporting structure.<\/strong> This point is especially critical: it is not enough for the lifeline to be strong; the structure it is fastened to must be able to withstand the loads anticipated in the design.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The number of users.<\/strong> When the system is multi-user, this condition must be an explicit part of its design and technical validation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This calculation must be performed by qualified professionals and must be reflected in the system&#8217;s technical documentation. ZOIS lifeline solutions are designed in accordance with the standards set out in UNE-EN 795, UNE-EN 353-1\/2 and Royal Decree 2177\/2004.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Capacity by System Type: Guardrails, Nets and Vertical Lines<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all protection systems work the same way, so the number of users will depend on the specifications of each one:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Perimeter guardrails:<\/strong> these are collective protection. They do not rely on the worker clipping in, but on preventing the fall, so they do not operate with a limit on connected users. Their capacity is expressed in terms of resistance to the loads defined in their standard. Our ANANKE guardrails are certified under UNE-EN 14122-3. There is also a fundamental technical precaution: a guardrail must not be used as an anchor point for a fall arrest system unless it has been expressly designed and validated for that function as well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Safety nets:<\/strong> they protect fragile surfaces such as skylights, rooflights or translucent panels. They also do not depend on a number of users &#8220;clipped in,&#8221; but on the strength of the protected surface. PIGNUS nets are designed and tested in accordance with UNE-EN 14963 and UNE-EN 1873.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Vertical lines (UNE-EN 353-1\/2):<\/strong> Vertical lines work differently from horizontal ones. They can incorporate a rigid or flexible anchor line, together with a compatible sliding fall arrest device. The usual technical references are <strong>UNE-EN 353-1<\/strong>, for devices on a rigid anchor line, and <strong>UNE-EN 353-2<\/strong>, for devices on a flexible line. Here too, it should not be automatically assumed that several workers can use the same line at the same time. <strong>The capacity and conditions of use must be verified in the specific instructions of the installed system.<\/strong> <br\/>In installations where the vertical access may be used by several technicians, it is especially important to determine:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Maximum authorized number of users.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Minimum required distance between them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compatible sliding device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Access and evacuation conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In all cases, it is the technical data sheet and the manufacturer&#8217;s instructions that must establish the limits of use.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to Check Your System&#8217;s Capacity in the Technical Data Sheet<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a properly documented installation, the user should not have to estimate how many people can use the system: that information must be available and verified before connecting.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The information that must be located includes:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Manufacturer and model.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maximum number of users.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Applicable standard or technical specification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Type of compatible device.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Installation date.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Installer identification.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Last inspection carried out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Usage limitations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Authorized configuration.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The installation documentation must be kept and remain available to those who manage and use the system.
