However, when you get to the site, the actual structure does not always match the one planned in the project, and at that point what seemed correct may no longer be. In work-at-height safety, this kind of mismatch is no minor detail.

In this article we ask what happens in this situation, the risks of ignoring it, and what should be done to ensure that the safety system complies with the regulations under real conditions of use.

Why Might the Structure Not Match the Planned One?

The big difference usually appears during the installation phase of the fall arrest system. That is when the installer physically accesses the structure or roof, takes actual measurements and checks where the anchors should be placed. Until then, many decisions have been made based on drawings or, in some cases, on documentation provided beforehand.

The most common changes from the original project tend to be sheet thicknesses different from those planned, purlins with different spacing, structural profiles that do not match those defined in the project, or reinforcements that were ultimately never built. In existing buildings, it is also common to find structures that have been modified over time without those changes being reflected in the original documentation.

These differences directly affect the behavior of the fall protection system, since it is the structure that must absorb and transmit the forces generated both in normal use and in the event of a fall.

In many cases, these discrepancies are not detected earlier because it is assumed that the construction matches the project on paper. On site, this assumption does not always hold, especially when working with incomplete or outdated documentation .

What Are the Risks of Installing a System on an Unplanned Structure?

Installing a system without first checking the actual structure can mean the whole assembly no longer complies with work-at-height safety regulations, even if the product is properly certified. An anchor may be fastened to an element that lacks the necessary strength or that does not behave as anticipated in the design.

This directly affects the stability, durability and strength of the system. The loads generated in a possible fall may not be distributed correctly, causing deformation, cracks or even premature failure of the system. And a fall does not even have to occur: with daily use, the system may deteriorate sooner than expected and lose effectiveness.

One of the biggest dangers is from the user’s point of view, since the person working tends to trust the system too much and to assume it fully complies with the regulations. But of course, if the structure is not suitable, that protection and safety are only apparent and create a false sense of security.

It is important to know that the fall protection certificate validates the product that was tested, but it does not guarantee that the system on its own complies with the regulations. The regulations apply to the assembly formed by the system and the structure under real conditions.

What Should Be Done When This Problem Is Detected?

When it is detected that the structure is not the one planned, the decision must be made using technical judgment. It should not be resolved solely on site or fall only on the installer. It is necessary to analyze whether, with the actual structure, the fall protection system still complies with the regulations.

Adapting a solution directly on site is only valid when the changes do not affect the way the system works. If the load-bearing structure, the way loads are transmitted or the location of the anchors must be modified, the design will need to be reworked.

In this process, communication between the installer, the engineer and the manufacturer is key. Providing details about the structure makes it possible to assess the situation and define a safe solution.

Conclusion

In work-at-height safety, complying with the regulations does not depend solely on installing a certified product. It depends on the complete system being designed, manufactured and installed taking into account the actual structure it will work on.

It is common for the project and the site not to match, but ignoring that difference is the real risk. Whenever there is any doubt about whether a fall protection system complies with the regulations in a specific situation, the most responsible course is to review, rework and consult.

Analyzing the case in time is the best way to guarantee real, effective safety.

If you have any questions, you can contact us.

In many construction projects, the fall protection safety system is designed from drawings, measurements and other data that do not always reflect the situation on site with complete accuracy.
