{"id":35013,"date":"2025-09-08T07:58:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-08T05:58:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/desarrollo.ypsossafety.com\/design-of-vertical-ladders-in-confined-spaces\/"},"modified":"2026-10-29T23:31:23","modified_gmt":"2026-10-29T22:31:23","slug":"design-of-vertical-ladders-in-confined-spaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/desarrollo.ypsossafety.com\/en\/design-of-vertical-ladders-in-confined-spaces\/","title":{"rendered":"Design of Vertical Ladders in Confined Spaces"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confined spaces have characteristics that make them places with various risks, including a possible fall when working at height, since entry and exit are sometimes made by ladder.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, the design and installation of this type of <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/escalera-vertical\/\">vertical ladders<\/a> in confined spaces present unique technical challenges, since they must comply with specific regulations and ensure workers&#8217; safety under difficult and restricted conditions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this article we will look at some of the fundamental aspects we need to consider when designing and manufacturing this type of ladder.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Considered a Confined Space and What Risks Does It Involve?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First of all, we need to know what a confined space is, according to NTP 223:<\/p>\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><em>A confined space is any space with limited openings for entry and exit and unfavorable natural ventilation, in which toxic or flammable contaminants may accumulate or which may have an oxygen-deficient atmosphere, and which is not designed for continuous occupancy by a worker<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Within this type of space, and based on NTP 223, we can distinguish between:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Open only at the top and with a depth that leaves them with almost no natural ventilation (wells, silos, tanks, &#8230;)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>With entry and exit openings (tunnels, sewers, reactors, &#8230;)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Risks of Confined Spaces<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When working in confined spaces we must be aware of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/riesgos-en-trabajos-en-altura-como-identificarlos-y-evitarlos\/\">hazards <\/a>we may face; they can be classified into general risks and specific risks.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>General risks in confined spaces<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this category we find:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mechanical risks: equipment failures, collisions, impacts, &#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Risk of electrocution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/como-calcular-la-distancia-de-caida-libre-necesaria-para-elegir-el-sistema-anticaidas\/\">Falls to a lower level<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poor posture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Falling objects<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Harsh work environment: cold, heat, noise, &#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Communication problems between the inside and the outside<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Specific risks in confined spaces<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here we find those directly related to the working conditions of this type of place, such as:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Asphyxiation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fire<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Explosion<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Poisoning<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Which Regulations Govern the Design of Ladders in Confined Spaces?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As mentioned, one of the risks in this type of space is a fall to a lower level, so it is important to keep the regulations in mind at all times in order to work safely.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standards governing vertical ladders focus on the minimum provisions that this type of structure must meet; specifically, the reference standard is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/escalas-fijas-une-en-14122-4\/\">UNE EN 14122-4<\/a><\/strong>, which we have already discussed on other occasions.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These minimum requirements include:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Structural strength<\/strong>: The ladder must be able to support the weight and stresses it will be subjected to. This plan should therefore include:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Evacuation procedures<\/strong>: Detailing how to act in the event of an accident<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Suitable rescue equipment<\/strong>: Having the necessary equipment and PPE to act quickly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Ongoing training<\/strong>: Having the procedure and the equipment is useless if workers do not know how to use them, so operators need to be trained in rescue<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Most Common Mistakes When Designing Ladders for Confined Spaces<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Designing ladders for confined spaces requires precision and experience.
