In industry, buildings, commercial areas, and other sites, it is common to find skylights and rooflights that let natural light pass through.<\/p>\n\n

However, when we install this type of element on our roofs, we may be adding a risk to the work environment, especially if people need to pass through the area where they have been installed to carry out various tasks, such as maintenance.<\/p>\n\n

Skylights and rooflights, generally made of plastic, would not support a person’s weight in the event of a fall, so they are usually fitted with protective meshes<\/a> to avoid this risk.<\/p>\n\n

Although, in regulatory terms, all safety systems are usually governed by a standard, such as UNE EN 14122, there is no such specific standard for safety meshes that protect skylights and rooflights.<\/p>\n\n

To follow some guidelines in their design, manufacture, and testing, we turn to the standard UNE EN 1873:2015<\/em> together with its 2016 amendment, where we can find the test methods related to skylights. The standard is not directly related to meshes, but its guidelines can be applied to the testing and manufacture of these safety systems.<\/p>\n\n

What Are Safety Meshes?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n

Skylight protection meshes<\/a> are essential components of safety in industrial and commercial environments.<\/p>\n\n

These systems are designed to prevent falls through skylights, providing a physical barrier that protects workers during maintenance, inspection, and repair tasks on roofs.<\/p>\n\n

However, for these meshes to perform their function effectively, it is important to implement a rigorous program of maintenance, checks, and inspections, even though the regulations say nothing about it.<\/p>\n\n

Responsibility for Protective Meshes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

A very common mistake in the height safety sector is to think that, if inspections of a safety system are not required by a standard, they do not need to be carried out.<\/p>\n\n

The Occupational Health and Safety Law establishes that the employer must ensure the safety and health of its workers<\/em><\/strong>, adopting the necessary measures to do so. This also includes maintaining any safety device that has been installed.<\/p>\n\n

For skylight and rooflight protection meshes, no specific or mandatory inspection schedule is set, but it is advisable to draw up an inspection plan<\/strong>. The function of these systems is to prevent accidents that can lead to a serious or even fatal situation, and deterioration of the safety system can increase the risk of such consequences.<\/p>\n\n

What Factors Can Deteriorate a Safety Mesh?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n

Since they are generally exposed on roofs, these safety systems must withstand the weather with all its factors, which can sometimes be very demanding conditions such as:<\/p>\n\n
