To do so, we turn to all kinds of safety systems, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/barandilla-de-seguridad\/\">perimeter guardrails<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/escalera-vertical\/\">access ladders<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/linea-de-vida\/\">lifelines<\/a>, etc.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another widely used safety element is the crossover, also known as an elevated walkway or crossing platform. These safety systems ensure passage through areas where we encounter different obstacles, such as:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pipes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cooling ducts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Electrical cable trays.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Machinery.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thanks to these elements we achieve continuous, safe passage in the areas where they are installed, but installation alone is not enough. For these systems to fulfill their function and provide the safety we need, they require inspections and maintenance to prevent premature deterioration and, as a result, becoming a hazard. The UNE EN ISO 14122 standard sets out a series of requirements containing the guidelines needed for crossover maintenance.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Is a Crossover Manufactured?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before looking at the maintenance and inspections these systems require, it is important to know how they are manufactured so we can take into account the elements that make them up and get an idea of what we will need to check.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crossovers are metal structures made up of the following elements:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ascending stairs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Horizontal platform.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Descending stairs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety guardrail in cases where the crossover height exceeds 500 mm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, when carrying out maintenance or an inspection, we will take into account all of the elements that make it up, as well as their fixings.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Criteria of the UNE EN ISO 14122 Standard<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/ypsossafety.com\/norma-une-en-iso-14122\/\">UNE EN ISO 14122 standard<\/a> consists of several parts, but all of them revolve around the goal of establishing design, manufacturing, installation, and maintenance requirements for safety systems.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of its requirements is that the selected safety system must ensure the safety of users throughout the entire service life of the system, which is why inspections of this equipment are a fundamental part.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These inspections range from the material selected for manufacture based on the installation environment, to the type of anti-slip surface needed and the strength and stability of the anchors. It is very important to pay special attention to this maintenance, because a well-designed and well-built system is of no use if it can show wear over time.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A number of factors can affect their durability, such as:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Corrosion: Due to the passage of time, the environment where they have been installed, and the systems&#8217; exposure to the elements.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tightness of the fixings: Due to use and the vibrations produced as users walk across, the connection fixings between its elements can loosen over time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wear of the anti-slip surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Deformation from impacts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Any anomaly in these areas can pose a risk to the safety of the system, which is why we must keep a detailed, documented maintenance plan.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Recommended Inspections<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The UNE EN ISO 14122 standard does not give a specific figure for crossover maintenance, but it does make clear that there must be a plan of periodic inspections. The frequency of these inspections will depend on use, the conditions at the installation site, and exposure to the elements.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a general rule, monthly visual inspections and a more complete inspection once a year are recommended.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The points to check visually are:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rust on any of its components.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Condition of the joints.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Checking the anti-slip surface.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Making sure there are no obstacles or accumulated dirt.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a more complete inspection, we will also make sure that:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The tightening torque of the fixings is correct.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are no deformations or breaks in its parts that require corrective maintenance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check that the system&#8217;s identification plates are still legible, or replace them if necessary.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check that the system is properly marked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If, during the inspections mentioned, the safety system shows any defect, we will carry out the necessary preventive or corrective maintenance in order to keep the equipment safe.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Inspection Records<\/strong><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once the inspection or maintenance has been carried out, we must document all of these tasks. This will help us keep track of inspection and maintenance dates, and it will also be important information if any incident occurs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The inspection record should include, at a minimum, the following information:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>System installation date.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technical specifications.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Date and results of inspections.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Maintenance actions performed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Signature of the person responsible for each inspection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With all of this data, we can keep rigorous control of our structures.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although crossovers are a simple and robust solution for bridging obstacles, their maintenance is just as important so that the safety they provide lasts over time. By doing this, we will extend their service life and avoid unnecessary risks.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important to invest time and resources to prevent premature deterioration of these safety systems. To that end, we will follow each manufacturer&#8217;s instructions regarding the maintenance and inspection of these structures.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also advisable for this work to be carried out by duly qualified personnel with the proper manufacturer training, in order to do a thorough job.
