Protection Systems for Rooflights and Skylights

In safety work, attention is paid to the most delicate parts of the roof. Specifically, we are referring to rooflights and skylights, which are part of industrial design to provide lighting and ventilation inside the facilities they sit on.

It is important to understand the risks and how to avoid the danger of falls from height by applying the right safety systems for each roof.

Supply and Quotes for Rooflight and Skylight Nets

We have a technical team that analyzes each case to provide the best solution based on the structure, the use it will be given, and the level of risk. We offer different types of protective nets for different fragile roofs, custom designed.

01 / SITE VISIT

Risk analysis

We identify the rooflights and skylights and assess the structure and the building interior to detect obstacles and determine the real level of risk.

    What People Ask Us Most
    About Fall Arrest Safety Nets

Rooflight protection systems are tested under the UNE-EN 1873 standard, which governs accessories for skylight systems and roof fixings. In addition, UNE-EN 14963:2007 sets the requirements for continuous plastic rooflights, which serves as the basis for understanding their load limit. In the field of OHS, RD 1627/1997 and RD 486/1997 establish the obligation to protect fragile surfaces. PIGNUS Plate is certified under both technical standards; PIGNUS Special under EN 1873.

The flexible mesh (such as PIGNUS Plate) uses a single-twist weave that adapts to the geometry of the rooflight and absorbs the energy of a fall through controlled deformation. The rigid mesh (such as PIGNUS special) is a welded grid with a frame that keeps its shape under load, which makes it better suited to rooflights with long spans between supports or to installations where the protection may receive additional loads, such as on photovoltaic roofs.

Whenever people may access the roof: maintenance work, equipment installation or inspection, cleaning, or any other activity involving a human presence on the roof. In industrial buildings with HVAC equipment, photovoltaic installations, or ventilation systems on the roof, periodic access is routine and rooflight protection is, consequently, mandatory.

Why Rooflights Are the Most Underestimated Risk on a Roof

A rooflight serves a useful function: bringing natural light into the building without relying on artificial lighting. The problem is that to do so it uses translucent materials — fiber cement, polycarbonate, reinforced plastic — that are not sized to support the weight of a person.

From above, on many metal sheet or panel roofs, the rooflight looks exactly the same as the rest of the surface. Same height, same plane, same visual appearance. The difference is only noticed once it has been stepped on, and by then it is too late.

Accidents from falls through rooflights have a feature that makes them especially serious: there is no room to react. There is no edge to grab, no visible net to warn of the danger. The fall is immediate and the height is usually that of the entire building.

Preventing this risk has a clear technical solution: permanent collective protection installed over the rooflight, able to withstand the dynamic load of a fall before it occurs. This is what Ypsos Safety’s PIGNUS systems do.

Two Systems, One Goal: Certified Collective Protection for Rooflights

There is no single type of rooflight or single roof configuration. Protection has to adapt to what is installed, not the other way around. That is why Ypsos Safety offers two complementary solutions within the PIGNUS family, each designed for a specific technical context.

PIGNUS Plate: Flexible Single-Twist Mesh for Metal Sheet Roofs

PIGNUS PLATE is the solution for rooflights on metal sheet roofs. Galvanized single-twist wire mesh, with the same spacer block and sealing gasket system that characterizes all PIGNUS products: no friction, no vibration, no water leaks.

    Technical features:

    • Galvanized single-twist wire mesh
    • Spacer blocks to avoid friction and vibration between the mesh and the rooflight
    • Sealing gaskets to waterproof the roof at each fastening point
    • Outdoor durability with stainless and galvanized components
    • Collective protection against the risk of falling through
    • Customizable length from 1 to 25 meters, adaptable to rooflights of different sizes
    • Compatible with fasteners on sheet from 0.5 mm thick

    Standards: UNE-EN 14963:2007 · UNE-EN 1873:2015 + A1:2016 · UNI-EN 1873:2014 · DIN-EN 1873:2015

The customizable length of up to 25 meters is a relevant detail: many rooflights on industrial roofs are continuous, running the entire length of the building. PIGNUS PLATE is made to measure to cover that length in a single piece, with no intermediate splices that could compromise the continuity of the protection.

PIGNUS Special: Rigid Welded Grid for Long Spans and Photovoltaic Roofs

PIGNUS SPECIAL is the solution when project conditions call for greater structural rigidity. A solid welded grid with a frame and anchor brackets, made with 5 mm wire to ensure high mechanical strength.

It is designed specifically for two situations that the flexible mesh does not handle optimally: rooflights that span long distances between supports, and roofs where a solar panel installation already exists — or is planned.

    Technical features:

    • Welded grid and frame with anchor brackets
    • 5 mm diameter wire for high mechanical strength
    • Structural robustness to withstand stresses and loads during use
    • Effective solution for different industrial and construction environments
    • Special manufacturing adapted to the needs of each project

    Standards: UNE-EN 1873:2015 + A1:2016 · UNI-EN 1873:2014 · DIN-EN 1873:2015

Project-specific manufacturing is not a sales euphemism. PIGNUS SPECIAL is designed for each installation, taking into account the rooflight dimensions, the distance between support points, the expected loads, and compatibility with any existing or future photovoltaic structure.
